TENERIFE is the perfect holiday destination. The name itself conjurs up visions of lush green tropical scenes and sun kissed beaches.Tenerife is an all year round holiday destination although it is one of the wettest(relatively speaking) of the Canary Islands. It does tend to be drier and sunnier in the South of the island. Temperatures as in all the Canary Islands are sub tropical rarely falling below 55 F in winter and 70F in Summer.Expect Summer temps to be in the 80s minimum! So away from the beaches you will find verdant slopes with tropical palms rising high in the interior to the rather bleaker and desolate landscape that is Mount Teide.Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, roughly triangular in shape rising up in the centre to Spain`s highest mountain the Volcano, Mount Teide. The trip up to the summit of Teide is probably the best known and most popular tourist trips on TENERIFE.
TENERIFE is the largest and most populous island one of seven that make up the autonomous region of Spain known as The Canary islands.Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island`s capital and also one of the two capitals of the Government of the Canary Islands, the other being Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. This has been the case since 1927.
The high relief in the interior means that Tenerife is not as cloud free as the lower altitude islands such as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and also results in a generally greener landscape. The holiday beaches on Tenerife are the familiar dark sand beaches associated with volcanic areas. Sand has also been brought in resulting in man made beaches in some of the main resorts. In general the north of the island tends to be cloudier than the south which used to cause problems with the airport often shrouded in mist or low cloud. A newer airport was constructed in the quieter south of Tenerife firstly to cope with ever increasing holiday visitor numbers to the island and secondly for safety reasons.Tenerife has approximately 5 million holiday visitors per annum, more than any of the other Canary Islands. Tenerife was also the first of the Canary Islands to cash in on the package holiday boom of the 1960s unfortunately some say the island`s natural beauty has been spoiled by over development. This view however is subjective.Tenerife offers everything you could wish for in a holiday island.Just a four hour flight from the UK and with sub tropical temperatures all year round it truly is a paradise island destination.Because of the high relief it does tend to be sunnier in the South of Tenerife as warm air rises to form cloud. There are two airports also. One in the South and one in the North which makes access easier.Due to the sunnier prevailing conditions in the South of Tenerife more holiday resorts were developed here. Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos, Playa de San Augustin and El Medano can all be found here.Los Gigantes, famous for its vertical cliffs, is the most northerly of the Southern resorts whilst Puerto de La Cruz can be found in the very north.Puerto de La Cruz is the oldest resort town and has a beautiful array of sea water pools to be enjoyed designed by Manrique famous artist and native of Lanzarote.
There are also lovely Canarian villages and working towns both on the coast and in the interior such as Oratava, El Medana and Adeje a water sports paradise.
